What Should Matt Do With the Lockwood Mansion on Vampire Diaries?

Matt Donovan in The Vampire Diaries Season 4

Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) has lost a good friend, but he has gained one hell of a piece of real estate. Tyler (Michael Trevino) had to skip town (thanks a lot, Klaus), so he handed Matt the deed to the Lockwood mansion.

The hybrid did it so there would be a place for Caroline (Candice Accola) to escape from Klaus, but is that really all it’s good for anymore? The mansion has always been an important place on The Vampire Diaries, and it’s an awfully big place for one Matt. What should he do with his fancy new home? Below, we weigh some options.

Sell! Sell! Sell!
Let’s be honest, owning the biggest house in Mystic Falls is going to be a bit of a challenge for a high schooler, even one as self-sufficient as Matt. Can you imagine what the property taxes on it are going to be? We don’t think a Mystic Grill salary is going to cover that, and selling it would really give Matt a leg-up after graduation. It would be a bit of a nasty surprise to Tyler if Matt unloaded the place, but we’re pretty sure Klaus wouldn’t hesitate to pull the whole “burn the house down” trick he used when Kol (RIP) was being staked inside Elena’s house (RIP) if he really wanted to get to someone inside.

Paaaaaaaaaarty!
The mansion has played host to almost every big event in Mystic Falls, from the Founder’s Parties to the Originals Ball, not to mention countless other town-wide ragers. Matt would be doing the town a favor if he gave everyone back their place to kick it! Of course, Matt probably isn’t quite the hostess that Carol Lockwood was, so it’ll be more “red solo cup” than “catered canape.” But he’s earned the right to have a little fun, and the right to trash the place where he once caught Tyler making out with his mom.

Turn It Into a Bed & Breakfast
Did we mention the property taxes? If Matt wants to keep the place, we don’t think making a little money off of it is the worst idea in the world, and we do think Matt would make a delightful proprietor to a fabulous Virginia bed & breakfast. Can you imagine the business he’d do? The place is gorgeous! And it would be a spectacular wedding venue, assuming he could keep the murderous vampires to a minimum.

Mystic Falls Museum
Matt is a noble guy, and we can see him feeling a sense of civic responsibility towards this historic place. If he was so inclined, the Lockwood place would be a great spot to assemble things from the founding families, a la the Heritage Display, and maybe even lead some tours through the tunnels! Viking carvings and vampire dungeons? We’d buy a ticket to see that.
