The Vampire Diaries’ Paul Wesley on His Hopes For Season 5

Stefan Calls in Vampire Diaries Season 4, Episode 18, “American Gothic”
With the Season 4 finale of The Vampire Diaries on the horizon, it’s only natural to start speculating about Season 5. Entertainment Weekly asked Paul Wesley about what he’d like to see for Stefan, Elena (Nina Dobrev), and Damon (Ian Somerhalder).

In Paul’s opinion, it’d be great if one of them took the cure for vampirism. “I like to think [next season] will maybe get a little less hectic and go back to some of the less complex days of just building character,” he says. “Maybe one of us ends up being a human, and we see how we all have to deal with that on a much more grounded level.”

That would certainly shake things up for the love triangle! If Damon was no longer a vampire, it would likely break the sire bond hold he has over Elena — and we might actually learn how she feels about him. Paul agrees Elena has a connection to the elder Salvatore, “But her intense feelings for Damon during the sire bond — I can’t imagine that they were true 110 percent,” he says.

Stefan has insisted he wants to get Elena out of his life. Perhaps that means a new love interest — named Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola)? Executive producer Julie Plec admits she’s a fan.

“All I’ll say on the matter is I’ve been shipping them since Episode 2 of Season 2, when Stefan took her in the bathroom and told her she is going to be okay,” she says. “So if I’m shipping them, then maybe one day it’s a road that we can travel down.”

Steroline hearts the world ever just burst with happiness.
