Vampire Diaries Spoilers: The Gilbert ring no longer works!!!

With the destruction of the Other Side on The Vampire Diaries comes a whole host of unexpected consequences — including the end of the Gilbert Ring’s power. Uh oh. Someone get Matt Donovan a plastic bubble!
TVD executive producer Caroline Dries talked to Alloy Entertainment about the ripple effects of the Other Side’s destruction, saying: “Without the Other Side, Jeremy can no longer contact ghosts, which is how they know it’s gone-gone. This also means, as you guessed, the Gilbert Ring won’t work.” We suppose that makes sense, given that the Gilbert Ring worked by temporarily storing the wearer’s soul or whatever in the supernatural purgatory. No supernatural purgatory, no place to hang as a temporary dead person. Bummer.
We suppose this is somewhat of a moot point given that, as long as Matt or whoever else might be wearing the ring, stays in Mystic Falls, they’re safe from a supernatural death. The Travelers cast a spell at the end of Season 5 that makes Mystic Falls a magic-free zone and, since the Gilbert Ring only brought people back from death caused by a supernatural element, there’s no need for it within the Virginian township. At least for now.
We have to admit, aside from the obvious downsides that came with the destruction of the Other Side, it’s not such a bad development. They don’t have to worry about former enemies coming back from the dead. Jeremy doesn’t have to deal with ghost-haunting. And we as viewers finally have some stakes again: death means death. We can work with that.
