Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) might be gone for good on The Vampire Diaries. That is, if co-stars Nina Dobrev (Elena) and Paul Wesley (Stefan) have anything to say about it. The TVDers took to the red carpet last week for The CW upfronts, and both told Buzzfeed that characters need to start dying for real on the vampire drama (something we tragically agree with). Does this spell bad news for Damon and Bonnie who seemingly died in the Season 5 finale?
“I want them to start killing people,” Paul said. “It kind of drives me insane that they don’t. You can’t keep killing characters and bringing them back while using death as a catalyst for us caring about the episode. Death has to the be ultimate fear on our show, so when Stefan is trying to rescue Elena, we’re genuinely terrified she might die. Otherwise, what’s the point?” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves, Paul.
Nina expressed a similar opinion: “In the beginning, the shock value of killing Vicki in the first few episodes made us stand out. As soon as you start bringing people back, you kinda lose that. I mean, it’s great for me, personally, because I get to hang out with my friends, but from a story standpoint, now you don’t care or believe when someone dies because you’ve seen how easily they can come back. The witches can always fix it, somehow. It’s been six years, so I think it would be good to go down the list and cross them off.”
Though it’s true that Nina and Paul aren’t making the narrative decisions on TVD, their sentiment is a common one — perhaps even in the writers room? Might this factor into decisions made about Damon and Bonnie in Season 6? Though we know both Kat and Ian are contracted through the sixth season, we don’t know what form their characters and storyline will take. Are they alive? Will they stay alive? Where are they? We can’t imagine TVD killing Damon off especially, but maybe that’s exactly why the drama needs to do it.
