Vampire Diaries season 6 : Ian Somerhalder says drama is inevitable

The real tragedy of Damon Salvatore’s death in season finale of The Vampire Diaries (besides everything) was in the fact that, as Stefan mused, he had just found happiness with Elena. Until the fates stepped in and tore them apart — as it will always be, argues Ian Somerhalder. What did he tell Entertainment Weekly about his hopes for Damon in Season 6 — should he return (wink!) — and inevitability of drama for the Salvatores and Elena?
What does Ian hope his on-screen counterpart be doing come Season 6? Damon Salvatore will be “in the Bahamas, drinking rum,” of course — because “it’s been a tough five years for him.” Something tells us that ain’t gonna happen and, all joking aside, Damon thinks so, too. Besides, what he really wants for Damon, Stefan, and Elena is much more intrinsic that beach-side boozing.
“Damon, Stefan, and Elena, they’re all extraordinarily different people, but hopefully, what happens is that in some crazy, cohesive way, they all get to live their lives in a very harmonious way,” Ian said of his hopes for the characters. “The problem is, it’s Mystic Falls, and harmony does not work within this spectrum, so it’s probably going to be more jagged and somewhat abrasive. There’ll be bits and pieces layered in there that are going to be pretty and soft, but ultimately, if you’re happy in Mystic Falls, there’s no drama, and if there’s no drama, there’s no show.”
