Vampire Diaries 4 Speculation: Is Elena’s Sire Bond to Damon Broken?

We’re not going to lie. The Vampire Diaries twist of having Elena (Nina Dobrev) sired to Damon (Ian Somerhalder) was a good one, but we tired of it quickly. Many people pointed out that it stripped the newbie vamp of her agency and made the couple’s interactions kind of icky.

The sire bond was broken when Elena switched off her humanity. The emotionless bloodsucker taunted Damon endlessly about it. In Season 4, Episode 21, “She’s Come Undone,” Elena told him, “You know what else blew? Being sired to you. Going every day believing that I was in love with you. I remember every horrible moment of it, and you, so scared that it wasn't real. Well, guess what? It wasn't. You were right.”

Luckily, she got her feelings back in the same episode and can stop hurting the people she loves. We didn’t see much of the old Elena, so it was hard to tell whether or not the sire bond came back with her emotions. However, as those feelings came flooding in, she did ignore a simple command from Damon. He said, “Look at me.” Instead, she got up and walked away.

Julie Plec teased that we’ll find out how Elena feels — or doesn’t feel — about Damon by the end of Season 4. “It will revitalize the triangle for sure,” she said, “and as far as the Elena and Damon information, I think what it will do is cement their relationship — or lack thereof — once she comes clean with a sense of at least semi-permanence, if not permanence.”

In order for Elena to confront her feelings, the sire bond definitely needs to be permanently gone. Right?
