The death of Jeremy Gilbert was the shocking event that happened at the end of the last episode, and Nina Dobrev is now opening up and talking about the impact Jeremy's death will have on her character. Dobrev does make Jeremy's death permanent. No ring will save him this time. She said the following, according to ET:

"Losing Jeremy really, really, really changes Elena. Sometimes people recover from tragedy and sometimes they don't -- but it's a long journey for her. Elena's mourning period is much different than any I've ever seen depicted on TV before. She goes off the deep end and spirals downwards into a black hole of death and sadness and misery. I mean, your instinct is right when you asked if we'll see an Elena who embraces her vampire side to a different degree. It's an Elena we haven't seen before, and you'll be shocked, quite frankly."
Jeremy was her last connection to being a human. She had lost her parents, Aunt Jenna, Alaric, and Jeremy was the only person she had left in her world. Now, he is gone. The death will bring everyone in Mystic Falls together, but those around Elena will be very careful around her. Elena will do all she can to bring her brother back, but this death might not have an easy fix. Dobrev also revealed that his death will 'destroy' Elena because she could not protect him from it, and he really was all she had left.
TV Guide also shared more details about this situation for Elena. The site revealed the following:

"You'll find out if he's truly a goner before the next episode ends. But regardless of whether he lives, Elena is going to be in a bit of a state for a while. At times she will seem complete completely numb, while at others she will display a fiery recklessness that leads her to do something she might ultimately regret."
