The Vampire Diaries' Matt Davis Left Show Over 'Creative Differences'
Fans of The Vampire Diaries’good guy (and sometimes very, very bad guy) Alaric were devastated when he died in the show’s third season, but in an interview with TV Guide, actor Matt Davis says he had a very different reaction: relief.
Why relief? It turns out he had some “creative differences” with his character.
"I'm very opinionated and when you're put in a position where you're getting the story lines that are not necessarily what's cranking at the back of your mind or digging at the potential of your character and you have to sit on your hands, that's frustrating,” he said. “And being a secondary character is equally frustrating.”
While Matt assures us that he and The Vampire Diaries producer Julie Plec are very good friends, she was well aware of these frustrations. So when she saw a good way to wrap up Alaric’s storyline in a way that jived with the end of Matt’s contract, she took it.
Matt heard the news on a Friday, and by Monday his agents had called him with an offer to star in the new pilot Cult!
While we were sad to lose Alaric, this super complicated new show looks so awesome we can’t hold Matt’s excitement against him. And remember, if Alaric hadn’t died we wouldn’t get to see Damon (Ian Somerhalder) drinking and talking to his buddy’s grave, which was all kinds of heartwarming. This is really a win-win.
