Ian has been campaigning hard for the role, and in the past James has hinted that she would like him to play the part by saying that she's a fan of The Vampire Diaries and by responding positively to a fan tweet featuring Ian dressed up in a 50 Shades-style masquerade mask. However, based on what she recently said to the New York Post, fans might be surprised by who she chooses to play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.
Here's what she said about casting the 50 Shades of Grey movie:
"We don't even have a filmmaker . . . so we are still a long way away from casting. I have some ideas . . . but it may not be who people expect."
James recently attended the Vanity Fair Oscar party, where agents were allegedly lining up to pitch their actor clients to the author. So she's going to have a lot of options to choose from.
Many Fifty fans are already expecting E. L. James to choose Ian Somerhalder as her Christian Grey, so her comment about casting should definitely trouble Ian supporters. It will also have Fifty fans wondering who the author is talking about—is there some really obscure actor that she has in mind, or does she see other fan favorites like Matt Bomer, Stephen Amell, and Henry Cavill as being unexpected choices simply because they're not Ian? Maybe she's even changed her mind and now thinks that Robert Pattinson should get cast as Christian.
It's also possible that she still wants Ian to play Christian—her unexpected casting ideas might be her choices for the role of Anastasia Steele. There were once reports that she favors Shailene Woodley for the part, and this pick would probably surprise quite a few fans since the actress doesn't get mentioned as much as heavy favorites Alexis Bledel, Emilia Clarke, and Lucy Hale.
So what do you think of James' comment about her casting choices?
