EXCLUSIVE SPOILER! The Vampire Diaries Spoilers: What Was Damon Like in the ‘70s? Exclusive

Damon in the Club in Vampire Diaries Season 4, Episode 17: “Because the Night”

The Vampire Diaries’ Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is always fun to watch, but it’s nice to see him get back to his Season 1 roots from time to time. You know, when he was a fan of fighting, biting, or seducing anything that moved?  We’ll get a taste of that Damon in Season 4, Episode 17, “Because the Night” when the show flashes back to the ‘70s.

Wetpaint Entertainment spoke with Ian Somerhalder about what we can expect from the disco era Damon. Spoiler alert: He was pretty punk.

We’ll see Damon in the ‘70s in a couple of episodes. What was he like back then?
He was having a blast. He was in New York. Imagine, New York — like a free buffet. Just walking around, munching on people, having a good time. It’s like a cat playing with a mouse, how deliberate they are, and how much fun they have. Damon was doing a lot of that.

Earlier, you said Damon is worried about Elena (Nina Dobrev).
Looking back, he realizes that having that humanity shut off was a brutal thing. He doesn’t want to see her go down that road, but ultimately, maybe she has to. She’s got to figure it out. Damon’s all for having all the experience. He’s all for that, but this situation’s backfired on him.

Based on the photos, Damon was more punk than disco back then.
Yeah, a little punkish, which is kind of awesome. You know, CBGB’s and all that. CBGB’s at the time was too high profile, so they went to this other guy’s bar where they hung out at and, you know, partied.
