Vampire Diaries Season 4 Speculation: Will Elena Take the Cure?

Elena in The Vampire Diaries Season 4, Episode 6: “We All Go a Little Mad Sometimes”

It’s the question driving Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries: Will Elena (Nina Dobrev) stay a vampire? Right now, just about everyone is looking for the cure. Stefan (Paul Wesley) wants to find it for Elena. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) wants to find it for Elena. And Elena seems to be the only one who has entertained the idea of taking it — other than Stefan, but that may have changed now that Elena’s with Damon (Ian Somerhalder). So if this cure is real, will Elena return to being human?

Well, it’s a tough call. At first, we didn’t like vampire Elena, and we agreed with her desire to be her old self again. But then we learned of her sire bond. If the sire bond is gone, won’t Elena be her normal self except with some heightened features? Maybe that will make Stefan happy?

However, we know it won’t make Klaus happy. His only chance at making more hybrids is to make Elena human again. And if we’re being honest, he usually gets what he wants… sort of.

Does Elena need to be human again for the show’s dynamic to work, or does she just have to get rid of the sire bond? And if she becomes human again, is she only postponing becoming a vampire later on? Let’s face it, in the world of Mystic Falls, staying human is not easy — unless you’re Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig). If she transitioned using, say, Rebekah’s (Claire Holt) blood, there’d be little chance of a second sire bond forming.

Really, it all comes down to what Elena wants. She certainly seems interested in finding the cure, but at the same time, she did enjoy her vamp speed during girls night, and now that can drink from a blood bag, she won’t have to hurt anyone. Of course, she may want to ditch her vampirism just to prove to Damon that her feelings for him are real.

What do you all think? Will Elena be human again by season’s end? Does she need to be?
