The Vampire Diaries’ Julie Plec on Why Kol Can’t Come Back For Good

Bonnie Faces Off With Kol in Vampire Diaries Season 4, Episode 12, “A View to a Kill”
The Vampire Diaries spoilers came fast and thick at the ATX Television Festival in Austin over the weekend. Executive producer Julie Plec and Arielle Kebbel (Lexi) answered questions at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and Wetpaint was on hand for the live event!

One topic on a lot of fans’ minds was the many deaths in Season 4. It was a treat to see some deceased characters return in the final few episodes, and Julie explained how she decided who got to return. “It’s kind a combination of our favorites and fan favorites,” she said. “We started the season knowing at the end of the year we were going to somehow drop the veil and see some of these people again. We made sure throughout the season to reset their stories throughout Season 4 … with Grams, Lexi, and Alaric, and Kol in some flashbacks.”
While fans may love seeing their favorites who’ve been killed off, Julie is always a bit nervous about bringing people back from the dead. She explained, “We believe very much that death has to have real stakes. When we started knocking off people one by one in the first couple seasons, we knew there would be a way to revisit them in flashbacks.”
But that doesn’t mean all the ghosts could stay for good. Many fans wanted Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) to come back permanently, but Julie says the writers agreed that they were done with his story. However, she teases we could see him in some flashbacks on The Originals.
Pretty good consolation prize, right?
