The Vampire Diaries at ATX Television Festival: Julie Plec on the Impact of Twitter

Julie Plec at the 2013 ATX Television Festival
Social media and The Vampire Diaries spoilers and news —  what more can a girl ask for? These topics are more were on everybody’s lips at this year’s ATX Television Festival in Austin! On Sunday, Producer Julie Plec and cast member Arielle Kebbel joined fans for a special screening and Q&A session at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and Wetpaint was lucky to be on hand for the live event!
We live in an age where social media reigns. Most of us watch the latest shows with our laptops up, all the better to share our reactions in real time with other fans of the show. It also gives the actors, writers, and producers behind the scenes a chance to key into their audience and relate to them as never before, which, says Julie, when asked about Twitter, has its good sides and not so great sides.

“I’ll be honest,” says The Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec. “It’s very difficult as a writer who has actively engaged in social media, as I have, to gauge [that]. On one hand, on the positive, it’s kind of like a built-in focus group. ‘Oh, they love this, they hate this, they’re surprised and crying at the right moments.’ You want to know that something’s working.”
But Julie knows that when it comes to social media, it’s hard not to be bombarded by people’s often intense reactions, which can skew a writer’s perspective if they aren’t careful. “On the other hand, the number of the Twitter followers are big … but you’re just getting the extremes,” says Julie, politically.
Do you blame us, Julie? She doesn’t. Julie understands that when it comes to our favorite shows, it’s hard not to be so extreme.
