The Vampire Diaries spoilers, news, and gossip were definitely in vogue at this year’s ATX Television Festival deep in the heart of Texas — Austin, that is! Sunday was no exception. This was no lazy morning affair if you’re a TVD afficiando! Producer Julie Plec and cast member Arielle Kebbel joined reporters, bloggers and fans alike to watch a special screening and then answer some juicy questions at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and Wetpaint was lucky to be there with both ears open!
Don’t worry ‘shippers, while we pride ourselves on our neutral stance, we won’t leave you in a lurch, especially not when someone like Julie Plec is dishing dirt that’s fundamental to your ‘ship. The ‘ship in this instance? All Klaroline, all the time.
“With the Klaroline thing, what’s just so funny is that we wrote that scene in Season 3 where he comes and he gives her the blood, and we knew we were kind of taking this young, bright-eyed girl and this old vampire and give them a moment,” says Julie. What a moment it was. The relationship between Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Caroline (Candice Accola) deepened, as even their total differences seem to only bring them closer.
“We thought it was interesting that Klaus was so dispassionate,” says Julie, “And when we saw it cut together, all of us were like, ‘Holy shit, that’s good!’ The way the camera’s shooting up at him and she’s all dying and wide-eyed and he’s all smooth and English. It was so cool — we just all fell over.” It’s good to know that not even someone behind the scenes is immuned to Klaus’s inherent charms.
With that in mind, Julie has no intention of making Klaus a softie. “Here’s this character that is loathsome, absolutely loathsome, and we don’t want to make him not loathsome — he’s the villain,” she says. But villian or not, even Julie Plec can’t deny that the chemistry between Caroline and Klaus is more powerful than most other forces. “He murdered the mayor, her boyfriend’s mother,” says Julie. “But there’s something so magical about them that their journey is far from over.” We can’t wait to see the next step on the journey is question — how about you?
