The Vampire Diaries Season 5 finale was hinting pretty heavily on the Steroline, but where does that leave Forwood? Will Caroline (Candice Accola) and Tyler (Michael Trevino) be in a good place come Season 6? Executive producer Julie Plec talked to TVLine on the subject.
“Honestly, we can officially say that Caroline and Tyler have reached a point where they genuinely and legitimately care about each other and have found their way back to being friends, but are no longer a couple,” Julie told the site. “I think Caroline and Tyler’s individual responses to losing Damon and Bonnie will set each of them on a new path in their life. Caroline is holding very strongly onto the idea that ‘We need to stick together in order to find our way back home and be allowed back into our town.’ And Tyler’s thinking, ‘Hey, maybe it’s time for me to go live my life.’ So everyone’s response to the events of the finale will be different and profound.”
We’re really glad to hear all of this. Though a return to the Forwood romance wouldn’t necessarily feel natural after everything these two have been through — Tyler leaving Caroline, then Caroline hooking up with Klaus (respective dealbreakers for these two characters) — neither would ending their friendship altogether. Caroline has never let go of the people she loves easily and, based on Julie’s comments, it doesn’t sound like that particular character trait is going to change anytime soon.
We’re also glad to hear that Tyler is thinking more seriously about what he should do next. His character was pretty confused in Season 5 — which is actually quite a realistic reaction to post-high school existence — but that confusion seemed to translate into an ineffective utilization of the character. TVD seemed confused about where Tyler was going, too, which is less acceptable. We hope Tyler gets some meatier, more consistent storylines in Season 6.
