The season finale of The Vampire Diaries ended with a shocker: the apparent deaths of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) as the Other Side collapsed, taking them with it. Though both deaths were surprising, we were particularly shocked by Damon's, as he is one-third of this show's ever-important love triangle. Will Ian be back for Season 6 of TVD?
Frankly, we can't imagine Ian not returning for Season 6. He is one of the biggest draws to this show — with a massive fan following — and his contract extends through the sixth season. Basically, if he really were killed off, it would be the decision of the show, not Ian. And we really can't imagine the show making that choice. We think Ian will be back for Season 6.
This speculation is seemingly supported by comments Paul Wesley (Stefan) made to TV Guide about the upcoming season: "[The finale] definitely establishes new parameters in the environment we'll be shooting in Season 6. They reset things in a way, and the writers have the ability to now change the circumstances and locations of where the show takes place."
To us, this sounds like TVD will be exploring whatever is one the other side of the Other Side, following Damon and Bonnie into whatever adventure that white light signified. We also think that Damon took Elena's heartbreaking "come back to me" very seriously. We wouldn't be surprised if his central struggle in the first act of Season 6 is, in fact, getting back to Elena.
We're less certain about Bonnie's chances. Though we think she may play a part in the beginning of Season 6, we're not sure if she's going to get another chance to evade death. She may just have met her quota. And, as we've mentioned before, there's only so many times TVD can backtrack on character deaths without losing all sense of stake. We thought they may have reached that limit, but — we have to admit — Damon and Bonnie's deaths were affecting. Even though we doubt both of them will permanently stick.
