The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Burning Question: Will Tyler Activate His Werewolf Gene?

Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) has a second lease on human life. Because of the way he died in The Vampire Diaries Season 5 finale — stepping foot inside of a magic-less Mystic Falls and seeing his vampirism and werewolfism reversed — he came back from the Other Side completely human. But just because his werewolf hasn’t yet been activated, doesn’t mean it won’t, especially with all of the “hostility and rage and aggression that,” according to executive producer Julie Plec, “gets bottled up in you when you have a latent werewolf gene.” Will Tyler activate his werewolf gene in Season 6? We speculate below!
Yes, it’s only a matter of time. When you introduce a potential plot development like this, it feels like a matter of if, not when it will be realized. If TVD chose not to activate Tyler’s werewolf gene, it would be like Star Wars introducing the Death Star, and never letting it destroy a planet (R.I.P. Alderaan). Not to mention: when has any character on this show ever been able to avoid killing? These kids murder more guest stars than Joffrey Baratheon in his heyday, and that’s saying something. Not to mention that, with the ever-present threats the Mystic Falls crew faces, there’s always the opportunity to end up in a kill-or-be-killed scenario. We give Tyler-as-human tell mid-season. No, seeing him fight it is the more interesting story. On the other hand, we have seen Tyler turn vamp before, which may negate our Death Star Logic. Perhaps, the more interesting story is in seeing Tyler successfully resist triggering the gene. Julie told The Hollywood Reporter: “Now that [Tyler] knows what he knows and just how wrong it can go, he's going to work really hard to keep himself walking a straight line and to keep his temper in check and to be a good guy in spite of all that anger and ugliness that simmers inside him. It's going to be a struggle, but it's going to be a good struggle.”
There’s also the added incentive that, if Tyler turns werewolf, he will no longer be able to live in Mystic Falls as it is currently a magic-free zone due to the Travelers’ spell. It would be a total bummer if Tyler had to move out of town, given that his family mansion is pretty sweet. Stay strong, buddy. If not for the life of your potential murder victim, then for the hot tub that has to exist somewhere on the Lockwood Manor estate.
