The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Spoilers: Katherine’s Hilarious?
The Vampire Diaries Season 5 premiere is less than a month away, and we can’t wait to see what TVD has in store for us. Give Me My Remote sat down with executive producer Caroline Dries to talk all the new developments in Mystic Falls. What deets did the EP spill?
Caroline said that the most surprisingly delightful characters in Season 5 are big baddies Katherine (Nina Dobrev) and Silas (Paul Wesley). The former is busy dealing with her newly reclaimed humanity and is not having the best time of it: “She’s still Katherine, but she’s the best vampire and the worst human,” said Caroline. “So she’s just a delight to write. Brian [Young] wrote Episode 2, where we see a side of Katherine that is just hilarious.”
While Katherine is more or less miserable in her new role, Silas is apparently having a great time impersonating Stefan (Paul Wesley) while his “shadow self” is getting pruny at the bottom of a nearby quarry: “Originally we were thinking, ‘Maybe he doesn’t say that much. Or he really kind of keeps to himself,’” revealed Caroline. “But that’s not fun to write. So Paul [Wesley] brings a fun personality to [Silas] and I think he’s popping.”
But it’s not all fun and games on the Silas front. In the Comic Con preview for Season 5, attendees were treated to a sneak peek that saw Silas-as-Stefan compelling an entire town gathering to do his bidding. According to Caroline, he’s only improving upon that ability moving forward: “Yeah, that’s his power; he’s immortal, [but] it’s like, you better exploit that psychic thing, because being immortal is — we have enough immortal people on our show. So he figures out a learning curve in the premiere. And he becomes a scary character, because if someone can anticipate what you’re going to do, that’s the worst villain.”
How long will Silas be able to keep up his Stefan act without anyone realizing he is not actually the younger Salvatore brother? From the sounds of it, not too long. Though Caroline wouldn’t reveal an actual time frame past “fairly soon,” she did say that the “characters are very smart and they have a lot of resources as their disposal. So one by one they figure it out. But it’s in an order that is kind of detrimental to some of the main characters.”
