According to Entertainment Weekly, The Vampire Diaries ratings were down 31 percent from an average TVD episode: It had 2.2 million viewers last night, though the numbers may be adjusted later and that’s without DVR tallies included.
However, that number is up slightly from the previous week’s episode, which had 2.1 million viewers. Because this was the pilot for the series, The CW executives will likely factor the viewership in when considering whether to pick up the show for fall.
According to EW, the less-than-stellar ratings don’t necessarily spell doom for The Originals. It’s a show with a built-in audience of TVD fans, and “What fans say online about The Originals pilot (and how the network’s executive team feels about the project creatively) might have just as much impact on the series-order decision as how many viewers initially showed up. In other words: Semi-lousy ratings or not, a series pickup remains likely.”
That’s great news for everyone who’s dying to find out what happens with Klaus, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), and their little unexpected visitor. The CW will announce The Originals’ fate at the Upfronts on May 15 — if not sooner.
