James has been guarded in the past, often saying she did not want to name any casting options so fans would not feel disappointment if the actor was not chosen. Being as tight lipped as she has in the past, this seemingly harmless retweet may be significant. The original tweet, sent to James by Bookish Temptations, is a picture of Ian Somerhalder wearing a masquerade mask with a quote from the book, "masks on, Christian grins, and as he dons his simple black mask, my prince becomes something darker, more sensual."

Twitter has become a popular platform for fans to communicate with the author but in the past she has given away little information. This retweet will be her second nod towards Ian Somerhalder. In September James admitted to Ryan Seacrest that she was a fan of "Vampire Diaries," a show which stars the smoldering Somerhalder. Fans can take this news tidbit any way they choose yet it appears casting may still be far off. The "Fifty Shades" film team has made it clear that a director would be announced before any actors are offered roles.
Ian Somerhalder, 34, will continue his long run as Damon on the hit CW show "Vampire Diaries" and he is not currently attached to any other projects in Hollywood. He spends his free time with philanthropic efforts such as the Ian Somerhalder Foundation which, "aims to empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures." His open schedule and immense fan support make him a strong casting choice if James feels he could fill the playroom jeans of Christian Grey.
