Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder Admits That “Playing Damon is Brutal”

Ian Somerhalder in The Vampire Diaries Season 4
While fans love the on-screen bad boy that Ian Somerhalder portrays on the hit CW show The Vampire Diaries, the sexy actor reveals that sometimes playing brooding vamp Damon Salvatore can be a little “brutal.”
“Don’t for a second think it’s always cotton candy,” he told Digital Spy. “Sometimes it really hurts, and a lot of stuff that Damon goes through is super cathartic for me as an individual. It’s not always pretty — it stirs up stuff.”

We can see what he means, playing Damon is probably really tough, especially with all of the emotion that is required for the job — not to mention the fact that he is a wrecking ball of destruction most times.

“You’re basically muddying the water all the time,” Ian continued. “You are pulling from all these things in your life that are not necessarily good, so it’s basically like getting paid for therapy instead of going and sitting in someone’s chair and going, ‘Tell me how you feel.’”

And sometimes, Ian revealed, the emotion gets to be too much for him to handle. “It’s not always fun. Sometimes it’s brutal and I’ll walk off set and I’ll cry for ten minutes alone in my trailer and I look at myself in the mirror and go, ‘What the hell are you doing? Why are you crying in this trailer? Go have a coffee or something.’”

But if you think Ian is headed for an emotional breakdown, think again. The actor is very professional and knows how to break out of these ruts and pep back up. “But for me, that’s acting — that’s what I do every day,” he noted. “It’s pretty weird.”
